Prehospital Emergency Care Glossary

Hi everyone! My name is Olivier Sénécal, I have been studying Prehospital Emergency Care for 3 years at Ahuntsic College. This glossary could be useful for the student in my field of study or for anyone who wants to understand the basics of medical terms. Each word in this glossary will help you to understand the parts of your body or the mechanism behind it. By learning all of those new words you could help your doctor, nursing or the paramedic to understand what wrong.

analphylaxis
noun
It's severe allergic reaction when you are in contact of an allergen, that needs to be treated right away.
Example: My cousin was stung by a bee his throat was swollen, he got an anaphylaxis

noun
It's a pathology, it occur when a blood clot or an air bubble is trapped in an artery
Example: My dad had a heart attack, the doctor said it was caused by an embolism

noun
Someone with low blood pressure normally under 100
Example: My doctor diagnostic me a hypotension and give me new drugs for it

noun
A profuse discharge of blood, as from a ruptured blood vessel.
Example: When I had my car accident my legs got struck, and I had en internal hemorrhage.

mydriasis
adjective
An excessive or prolonged dilatation of the pupil of the eye.
Example: My friend takes a lot of drugs his eyes was in a mydriasis.

nausea
noun
A feeling of sickness or discomfort in the stomach that may come with an urge to vomit.
Example: After I ate in this new restaurant I got a nausea.

paleness
noun
The state of being pale
Example: The main side effect of a heart attack is paleness

noun
A lung infection, in which the air sacs fill with liquid.
Example: My friend didn't come to school this week he got a pneumonia.

A continuous pain in the head.
Example: I have a big headache, I can't even do my homeworks.

edema
noun
Edema is swelling caused by too much fluid trapped in the body's tissues. Edema can affect any part of the body. But it's more likely to show up in the legs and feet.
Example: I need to wear compression socks because of my edema.

noun
Cephalalgia is a symptom that refers to any type of pain located in the head. There are more than 150 types.
Example: I fell on my head. The cepalalgia I got from this was so intense.

diabetes
noun
A disease in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired.
Example: I can't eat whatever I want because of my diabetes.

diaphragm
noun
A dome-shaped muscular partition separating the thorax from the abdomen in mammals.
Example: In my biology class we study the muscles of humans. We are able to see a diaphragm of a pig.

An injury appearing as an area of discolored skin on the body, caused by a blow or impact rupturing underlying blood vessels.
Example: His body was a mass of bruises after he had been attacked.

noun
A condition of muscular weakness caused by nerve damage or disease; partial paralysis.
Example: Examination indicates paresis of the upper left limb.

hypoxia
noun
Hypoxia is a state in which oxygen is not available in sufficient amounts at the tissue level to maintain adequate homeostasis.
Example: After climbing to high altitudes, the mountaineer experienced hypoxia due to the thin air.

hypothermia
noun
Hypothermia happens when you have long exposure to cold weather and your body temperature drops dangerously low.
Example: After falling into icy waters, the swimmer succumbed to hypothermia as her body temperature dropped dangerously low.

The humerus is a long bone in the arm that runs from the shoulder to the elbow.
Example: After a fall from the ladder, the patient was diagnosed with a fractured humerus.

noun
Any of the tubes forming part of the blood circulation system of the body, carrying in most cases oxygen-depleted blood toward the heart.
Example: After the accident, the doctor identified a severed vein, causing significant bleeding.
